MORE COLOUR!!!

Alright! So here's an update on Randeep's and my progress. We just recently finished the first draft of the film. We put it into a reel and we watched it. Then we decided we didn't like it. Well, not so much that we didn't like it, more that it was five and a half minutes long and we were getting bored by the end. It needed a chop down. But I suppose that was to be expected. I mean, what project that was ever any good was ever sent through to production after just one draft... am I right?... Guys?... Right?

Anyway, it doesn't matter. We're pushing ahead and working on some key parts to the story. We want to be able to show as many people as possible who could give us an honest and objective review of the story reel once we think it's at a place where those comment will be helpful (though we're sure our hearts will always think otherwise... please don't crush me). We are MEN! We can take it! I think.

Here is another colour test I did. I think we're getting closer with this design stuff too.

Quick layouts!

Took a short little break from boarding to do some really quick color studies - layouts are based on observational location sketches I did, and Matt cleaned up. Quick doodle of the mime for character placement and rough color study. The first pass was just colour, and the second with a slight overlay to unify the overall colour scheme.

Another Quick Shot at Colour

Yeah, so colour isn't my forte necessarily. I mean finding it is fun, playing with it is fun, but applying it... well that's more of an issue. I've been kinda just goofing around and hope it works. I'm semi ok with how this turned out. I actually looks pretty cool without lines i think.

Enter the "Brat Kid"

I want to sit him down and punch him in the face. But that's just me. It's a good thing the Mime is in this film and not me.

Designs!

Some quick doodle-designs for Jeremy and the unnamed little girl character. More shorthanded due to trying to figure them out for boarding purposes. Back to boarding!

More Paris

More ART! Muhahaha!!!

So this is my second attempt at using paint and a paint brush to do something creative, and not for school. I kinda like it.

Rough Panels.

Two random rough panels from the storyboards, without giving anything away ;)
More to come soon, busy boarding!

I have made ART!

These are some mime gestures I whipped up. It's been tough working on his design because as soon as we come accross something we like we tend to get bored of it two minutes later. However, I sketched up a newer version earlier today. I actually think this one may last a while. I'll do some more and post them all soon. Also, there are other characters in this film other than just this mime... time to get cracking on some bratty kids, a cute little girl, and a bunch of other bg people.

Come back soon!

Random Mime Stuff!

A very quick little bg study

Some designs for the mime, just playing around.

A thumbnail page from our first (now very discarded) pass of the story.

It's really awesome to work on this thing, and I'm having a lot of fun! More to come soon, this is just a quick little smattering of stuff...back to boarding!

Layout Test 1

This is a layout test and character colour test I was working on. Yesterday Randeep and I had a heated conversation as to the direction we wish to take the the layout designs. In the end we both wanted something more relaxed, as if from a children's book. I'm kind of liking what's going on in these designs. I'll try to explore them more.

Mime: A True Story: First Post

OK! So here is some concept art I've done recently. Randeep Katari and I (Matthew Kalinauskas) are setting out on an epic adventure to do an animated film... and we've just started... a month ago. In September we both started and pitched each other a few ideas. I had one about a Yeti and Randeep had one about an old married farm couple who are mad at each other. We also came up with a story together. It was all about looking beyond, being brave, and chasing the moment... lame.

So we each did a set of storyboards for our two stories (the lame one was left at the talking stage). When we finished we decided that we had each successfully created stories that were not good. So we went back to the drawing board... literally.

Randeep suggested we try thinking about mimes. There was a long awkward silent conversation consisting mostly of eye gestures and nostril flaring to follow. After the silence was broken by Randeep's brother, we got to using our words. It was fun! And we came up with a pretty cool story about a mime, a bratty kid, pigeons, a crowd, mime judges, New York City, and other things. So Randeep did a thumb-nail story pass at it. We then reviewed it and realized it needed work. Quite a bit of it... but in a good way. We are both really excited for it! We've come up with something we feel to be a very special and simple story. I hope you enjoy this blog about the making of this film. I hope we don't forget about it ourselves. If you've made it this far in the reading, congratulations, you have my respect.

Stop by the blog often :)
